College Prospects At Michigan City High School

NCAA Division 1 Colleges that need forwards should look no further than Michigan City High School....6'4" sky walking Ricky Gooden is a seasoned veteran with hard to contain paint explosivness....He attacks the glass like a wild man and is an offensive threat to the elbow....has SAT score but needs core GPA rise....Ricky has offers from NAIA Schools BETHEL, TRI-STATE, AND MARIAN....Gooden's 6'5" small forward 'mate Chris Ikpoh is a 3.5 GPA student with 1150 SAT....A huge sleeper Chris has long arms-a relentless rebound approach but his strength is 25 ft. shooting range....Ikpoh can light it up from deep....Northwestern now has interest with Kalamazoo JUCO, University of Chicago and North Park of Chicago.... 6'6" Mark Bishop is a drop stepping vertical solid D2 prospect....6'4" Rail thin William Hurt is mid- major D1 in two years after strong JUCO Program....Michigan City High School is a must annual review for all Mid Western College Programs in search of a few good men !!!....

South Bend Adams High School has two outstanding NCAA D2-D1 prospects in 6'4" 2G Gary Wright and 6'0" PG Rod Emmons....Wright is a stud athlete that does all well on the court....Adams is not high profile and Wright has no July College exposure...Academically,Wright needs JC and his skill is hi-major potential....Contact IBN on Wright....Emmons is a longtime IBN favorite with his skill and strength....The Ivy league type student is cannot miss D2 and a very good East Coast prospect in an academic oriented University.... Only mid-west Wittenberg is smart enough locally to offer Rod Emmons....

Indiana's top sophomores and juniors begin the amateur spring-summer season with their club practices this April 8-9....Recruiters should observe/evaluate the top talent at the three top Hoosierland programs :Bloomington Red, Spiece Gym Rats and Evansville Basketball Club (Mike Thomas)...Thomas will practice on the High School courts of the Evansville school system....Spiece will be at their new 8 court multi- million facility in Ft. Wayne and....Bob Pryor's 25 year old Bloomington Red program will play at the beautiful NIKE sportsplex center in Bloomington,In....The Indiana Crusaders will practice in Monrovia per coach Greg Gore....Many other scholarship worthy preps annually toil in other low profile programs and their coaches do not release rosters to tournament directors in fear they will lose their team to summer long recruiting....Case in point, National scouts from Boston To Spokane will be in attendance at the all world Run-n-Slam this May 5-7 at Purdue University....However-many Central Indiana teams will not list their athletes phone numbers in fear Spiece ,Bloomington or Mike Thomas will recruit their team....Reality is that those programs have committments and waiting lists from the previous September....They do not recruit from other Indiana programs because they formed their teams before the school year started.... Therefore, not publicly listing their athletes phone numbers only " hurts their athletes " because in the scholarship game - the window of opportunity is narrow and far too competitive for small minded people to be concealing important contact information from tournament directors and scouting services....Parents of all participating student-athletes should ask the coach of their son's team--Where has my son been promoted to and where if any place have you decided to not submit my son's information....The Scholarship game is far too important for parents to stand on the sidelines and not actively take an interest in their son's college career....See you April 8-9 AT THE SPIECE FT. WAYNE FIELDHOUSE!!! IBN unsigned senior workout will be very informal in nature due to the poor response from the student- athletes....

Thursday-March 30,2000

NCAA D1 PROSPECTS MARVIN SMITH (MERRILLVILE) and DAVID HANGER (NORTH NEWTON)

IBN expects both the elite athletes to pursue Jr. College in order to achieve their goal of NCAA D1 basketball....Smith reports he has an 850 SAT to match his 2.7 GPA so he will need a JUCO for one year if his game also naturally progresses .If not, he will need to play JUCO for two years before he is ready to reach the next level....Marvin Smith currently has offers from St.Joseph's with 'mate Jake Argenta and offers from North Park Chicago. and South Suburban JUCO in Harvey, Ill....

David Hanger like Marvin Smith is now a victim of not playing in camps or AAU last year as the D1 door is not opening....Hanger has a St. Josephs offer and now also Has offer from Ancilla Jr. College....Since he is retaking SAT in two weeks ,we do not expect a decision from David Hanger for 8 more weeks....Otherwise why take the test??

Wednesday-March 29,2000

6'9" LEVI ADAMS COMMITTS TO MOREHEAD STATE UNIVERSITY....The Terre Haute North Center has decided to play for Indiana legend Kyle Macy at the mid-major NCAA D1 program....Levi will be joining fellow Indiana senior 6'8" Corey Seegers of Columbus North at the Kentucky University....

JAKE ARGENTA TO ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE (Rensellaer,In.)

Merrillville High School's 6'5" forward has accepted a full athletic scholarship to the NCAA D2 Great Lakes Valley program.... Argenta contemplated several Low D1 to small college offers before accepting St. Joseph's offer....Out of place in the post--Jake is a " gazelle " in transition and a perfect choice for St. Joseph's.... On the rebound from sanctions, we expect the Northern Indiana program to once again gain respect in the midwest with their player and fan friendly exciting brand of hoops....

Andrew White rejects full athletic scholarship to NCAA D2 power Ashland University!!....The 6'4" shooter from Penn H.S. will attempt to walk-on at a D1 school and seek a roster spot thru try-outs....Certainly he is capable to do so ;but- the uphill battle in this long shot process is a miserable experience and often becomes extremely political in nature...Where he will do so at this time will be determined as will the scholarship that he turned down at Ashland....How good is Ashland basketball?? Pike High state champion Isaac Kincaid transferred there from Illinois State and Big Ten transfers yearly dot their rosters....Ashland University on scholarship is a tremendous opportunity for any student-athlete.!!

Tuesday-March 28,2000

Olney Junior College's Wes Attebury committs to University of Southern Indiana

The 1998 Evansville Reitz graduate has accepted a full athletic scholarship offer to the NCAA D2 perrenial powerhouse....Juco division one player of the year in Illinois region 24,. Attebury chose USI over several similar offers.... IBN salutes the former Reitz marksman for elevating all aspects of his game in two short years!!

Northeastern High School's Mark Fowler will announce college choice within two weeks.

The 6'3" 22 ppg. combo guard scorer will decide soon between offers from Division one Juco's Eastern Wyoming and Northwest College....NCAA D2 power Chadron State has also offered a full four year athletic scholarship ;but, we expect Mark Fowler to go JUCO so he will be NCAA D1 recruited in two years.... Stay Tuned!!

Rossville's 6'3" shooter Mickey Mcgill will have tough choices the next two weeks between offers from University of Indianapolis and NCAA Division one's Elon and Winthrop....Decision any day now....

Class 3A State runner-up Andrean's star Lathaniel Staten .... "Late's" college choice is predicated on how he fares on future SAT tests....We bet on Lathaniel to use all his test opportunities to make the score but do not expect many schools to stay with him much longer....His previously reported schools will only consider an academic qualifer....A scholarship at some level of the recruiting game will be available for Staten in JUCO or NCAA D2....

Monday-March 27,2000

JUNIOR COLLEGE ALL-AMERICAN CAMERON STEPHENS

The 6'7" 230 lb.Ft. Wayne native and Purdue castaway spoke with IBN Sunday evening concerning his NCAA D1 choices....Stephens will graduate this summer from Vincennes University....Memphis State University's new John Calipari program leads but he will visit the following four before he makes a decision:UNC-Charlotte-April 15, Ball State-April 22, Memphis -April-29, and Long Beach State-May 5....Stay tuned as Cameron Stephens will be announcing his decision first at Indiana Basketball News!!!

Sunday-March 26,2000

ZACH RANDOLPH'S GIANT'S DEFEAT BLOOMINGTON NORTH FOR 4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!!

Scoring 28 points and grabbing 8 rebounds,Zach Randolph led Marion past previously undefeated Bloomington North by the score-62 to 56....Super sophomore Sean May led North with 17 points and 8 rebounds....IU recruit Jared Jeffries was slowed by the Giants but still managed 10 pts.,8 boards,6 assists and 6 blks....Since the Mr. Basketball deadline is not until Wednesday-Randolph's premier performance should garner a few votes from those voters who realize that people make mistakes--ESPECIALLY TEENAGERS!! The law enforcement community seems to have forgiven "Zeebo" for his confessed sins as several uniformed officers were "hi-fiving and hugging" the Michigan State bound Randolph after Marion won the Championship.... Time will tell who wins the state's top player award!! IBN salutes both Marion and Bloomington North for a great game and outstanding seasons!!

CLASS 3A CHAMPIONSHIP--BREBEUF 72 ANDREAN 56

The Braves of Indianapolis Brebeuf employed a five man relentless defensive attack that completely disrupted the fifty niners team offense....Basically quicker and more aggressive in all aspects of the game,Brebeuf was led by Ball State recruit Michael Bennett's 25 points and the exciting play of Sophomore Marques Bennett and Freshman Sonny Troutman....Iowa State recruit Shane Power led Andrean with 25 points....Both teams may return next season with rosters full of talented underclassmen

CLASS A CHAMPIONSHIP--Lafayette Catholic 82 Union Dugger 70

IBN Favorite Brody Boyd started slow but dumped 35 points on 60% shooting....The state's all time leading scorer did not have enough help to offset the loaded parochial power....Brody must have thought he was seeing double with the Gilman twins holding and pushing hime for 32 minutes....To LCC's credit, Super Sophs Tyer Best ,Russell Trudeau, Jr. Eric Anthrop and frosh fast riser Kristoff Kendrick were too much for the Bulldogs....Best finished with 21 points, 11 boards and Kendrick delivered 15 points before leaving with an elbow induced injury.... With the young returning LCC roster and perpetual move-ins, the two time CLASS A CHAMPS should win their third title in 2001....

CLASS 2A CHAMPIONSHIP--Westview 59 Winchester 53

Much like the CLASS A contest, The CLASS 2A was decided by the team with the most offensive weapons....Westviews Nation of Yoder, Bontreger, Miller and Nelson proved once again they rule 2A basketball....Leading by 18 at one point, Westville never trailed the game and midway thru the third quarter, Winchester even lost Sophomore star Tyler Clevenger to a knee injury....5'11" Sr. Joel Weigand's heroic 11 3rd qtr. points inspired Winchester; but, coach Troy Neely's defending State champs were far too experienced to relinquish their two year dominance of 2A hoops....Scott Study was named Trester award winner and his 13 points, 8 rebounds led Winchester....Derek Yoder, Jason Yoder, Eric Yoder, Mark Miller, Jeff Nelson along with Study are all solid Low D1 to D2 unsigned prospects....

MONDAY'S NEWS--CAMERON STEPHENS HAS MADE HIS FINAL CHOICES!

Saturday-March 25,2000

4 CLASS State Championship schedule at Conseco Fieldhouse.....All Game Times are Indianapolis, Indiana time.

CLASS A-Lafayette Central Catholic(22-5) vs. Dugger (24-3) 10:30 A.M.

CLASS 2A-Westview (24-3) vs. Winchester(22-5)....Game time is 45 minutes after CLASS A awards ceremony

CLASS 3A Andrean (24-2) vs. Indpls. Brebeuf (23-2) 6:30 P.M.

CLASS 4A-Marion (27-1) vs. Blooimngton North (25-0. Game Time is 45 minutes after 3A awards ceremony

Eight Indiana High School teams go to war today in battle for four "watered down trophies...."America's greatest high school basketball players and coaches are from Indiana!!Their daily discipline is competition and the greatness of Hoosier Hoops is how the coaches teach players to achieve life goals....4 CLASS basketball is a joke!!! after three years of this "political nonsense", Indiana's players and coaches still refuse to allow "stuffed shirts" to ruin the game they love.

Unless foul trouble, turn overs or horrible shooting become factors --all four games today will be extremely close !!

IBN hopes to see you at Conseco Fieldhouse !!

Friday-March 24,2000

MYRON HODGE COMMITTS TO OLNEY JR.COLLEGE.The Evansville Bosse super prospect has chosen Olney after mulling 75 similar offers. As IBN predicted, 1999 Bosse graduate 6'3"Chris Maffett will also attend Olney with his friend Myron Hodge. Maffett is a very capable swing type player.

CLASS 4A Interviews with Marion's Zach Randolph and Bloomington North's Sean May

All American Zach Randolph tells IBN last night that he has been bombarded with Mr. Basketball questions....He said,"the championship is my only concern and I must win the game anyway for a shot at Mr. Basketball." Qualifying for Michigan State academically next season and Saturday's State title has been his goal all year....Zach has matured greatly as a man this season and now concerns himself with only things he has some control over....The consummate team player, Zach only wanted to know how teammate Matt Backs could be ommitted from the All Star Ballot...."How could Backs not be on the Ballot and Milan has two candidates?"-asked Zach.... Quite an insighful question for an 18 year old!!! Embarassingly ,we did not have an answer for the big fella...Anyway ,Zach concluded by stating at 6'9" 254 lbs. he is in the best condition of his life and The Giants are playing their best ball of the season....He looks forward to teaming with North's Jared Jeffries in both the McDonald's and USA All American games.... Only time will tell if 23ppg,16rpg, and five blocks per game plus a State championship will be enough for Zach Randolph to win Mr. Basketball...A State championship is his only chance for the top player award.

Whatever happens in the 4A championship game -one thing will be certain immediately following the game-6'8" 230 lb. Soph. Sean May will become the state's best returning post player for two years....Not only the best post in the Soph class but also May is better than any class of 2001 post....Scoring the last two points against Jeffersonville for the Semi-State championship, his inside out versatility with Jared Jeffries has been too potent for all opponents this season.... .Sean had these comments for IBN last evening,"We just got back from practicing at Conseco and I love shooting in that Place!"I have been assigned to guard Zach and I match up well with him." Finishing at 15ppg. and 10rpg.- Big Sean lists his favorite schools as Michigan State, Ohio State, Arizona , Duke and yes of course-Indiana.... Sean and Junior brother Scott May, will be playing with NIKE'S Bloomington Red summer program in April.

ZACH RANDOLPH, JARED JEFFRIES AND SEAN MAY ON THE SAME COURT IS AS GOOD AS THERE IS IN PREP BASKETBALL!!! SEE YOU AT THE GAME.

Thursday-March 23,2000

South Bend native Lincoln Glass has narrowed choices to 3!

The Lincoln Trail JUCO Sophomore reports he will choose between Bowling Green, Auburn and Dayton....Averaging 13ppg. and 4apg.,Glass's strength is the "inside-out feed the post game"....Leading Lincoln Trail to an 18-13 mark-"the Trail" finished 7-7 in conference play....The recruiting game certainly is interesting since we reported yesterday that Bowling Green also offered Lathaniel Staten....What if both Glass and Staten accept BGSU offers ?? Who do they take ? They only have one to give....Time will tell!! Greenfield 1999 grad Josh Mullins was a top freshman at Lincoln Trail. Averaging 12 ppg., 7rpg. and 3 apg., the sky is the limit for Josh if he will elevate his perimeter game this summer.... The 6'4" elite vertical country boy is now academically stable as his girlfriend is a supportive fellow student at Lincoln Trail....Next season Josh will be a Missouri Valley recruit.... Lincoln Trail coach Rick Arp played for legend Terry Collins and with Edgewood(In.) native Chad Killinger assisting-EXPECT Lincoln Trail to continue Being a "PLAYER" IN INDIANA PREP recruiting.

East Chicago Central's Corey Stokes has drawn interest from USC, Arizona State and Weber State....His coach would like for him to proposition forty eight at the University of San Francisco....Stokes will not be doing that as he is exploring the JUCO route....Hutch., Paris, Lincoln Trail and Central Florida have shown the most interest....Stokes would actually prefer Tallahassee in Florida but they are not recruiting him....How do you figure ? Stoke's family is from Florida and that is his JUCO preference...However, he is open to all and ready to visit schools....

Wednesday-March 22, 2000

CLASS 3A CHAMPIONSHIP ANDREAN (24-22) vs. BREBEUF (23-2)

Last night IBN talked to the Brebeuf Braves semi-state hero Jon Owens...Possibly the most underrated Senior prospect in Indiana, Owens drained a 26 footer at the buzzer to lift his Braves past Evansville Mater Dei 63-60...The Semi-state champion Braves now have the opportunity to win their first state crown since Glen Robinson's Roosevelt Panthers beat their Alan Henderson team in 1991...The 5'10" combo Owens averaged 17ppg and 5ppg. for the season...His versatile scoring arsenal and pressure defensive skill has now attracted interest from DIV. 1 MERCER, Tarleton State(Tx.) and Depauw(IN.).... His matchups vs. 59ers Lathaniel Staten and Rashad Pace should be exciting !!

The Fifty Niners semi-state was a struggle according to Lathaniel Staten. Late states, "We have trouble matching up with 6'7" teams. " Pendelton Heights Traver Griffin and Ft. Wayne Concordia's 6'7" Jr. Andre Patterson gave Andrean "fits" before Andrean took the crown...Patterson's between the legs dribble and then fallaway 3 pointer in Elliot Boarden's face may have been the play of the day at the Frankfort Sem-State....the personable combo Staten has benefited more than any statewide Senior thru tourney action...Previously his NCAA D1 interest was lukewarm but now he has four D1 offers in Bowling Green, Valparaiso, Univ. Ill. Chicago and Gardner Webb.... Jimmy Collins is the hottest on his trail but "State" will visit BGSU.... With a non cramping Shane Power, the 59ers with Lathaniel Staten will be very difficult to defeat!!

CLASS 4A NEWS SOON

Tuesday-March 21,2000

Westview (24-3) vs. Winchester (22-5) for the Class 2A Championship!!

Monday evening IBN spoke with Westview's PG Eric Yoder...Eric tells IBN the defending state champs were fortunate to survive the brutal semi-state. Against Taylor, Westview was fortunate to force 6'8" Josh Grant into early foul trouble. Even with Grant on the bench- a great deal of energy was spent in securing the victory...In the semi-state championship game vs. Ft. Wayne Harding, Eric stated,"they were easily the quickest team we faced all season."With tired legs, Yoder still was able to slow down Hardings "cat quick" 5'9" PG Daryl Burnett. With the Nation of Yoder healthy ,Eric states they are anxious to defend their CLASS 2A Crown. Saturday afternoon Defiance College joined Tri-State and Taylor in recruiting Eric Yoder

Like Westview, Winchester also survived a brutal Semi-State....Down the first 26 minutes to Bobby Windell's Silver Creek club, Winchester needed a frantic press to earn the morning game victory...Scott Study tells IBN "we wanted Paoli bad"- since last years 2 0T heart breaking loss to the Physical Rams...Much easier this time around, Winchester jumped out to a 30-14 first Quarter lead and never looked back against Paoli....Combo Scott Study finished with 23 points against Paoli and 18 points vs. Silver Creek....Franklin, Hanover, Indiana Wesleyan and Tri State all desire Study's services at PG

CLASS 3A Championship NEWS TOMORROW

Monday-March 20, 2000

Union Dugger(24-3) vs. Lafayette Catholic (22-5)

IF LCC thought they had a dogfight last season when they lost their 1998 crown to Tecumseh, this 2000 title fight will be beyond their wildest dreams....Iowa bound Brody Boyd has now dropped 2597 points on Indiana. This moves him two points ahead of former Lebanon great Rick Mount....Boyd tells IBN THAT Iowa coach and Indiana legend Steve Alford "rags" him about his scoring record.... Alford says he would have scored over 3000 points if he had the three pointer.... HEY STEVE, we have news for you!! If your teammates had not set so many screens and if you had not played matador defensive opponents every week- you would not have scored 2000!! Brody is the truth and coach Steve Alford is putting him in check before he reports to IOWA!

Union's secret weapon is 6'3" Senior Clark Golish ."Non stop havlicek type motion "is Clarks game and in two years he will be a great player"....Cumberland, USI, Lakeland JC, and Lincoln Trail are involved.... Besides the Brody bomber-Clark delivers 19PPG.,9RPG.,3APG.,and 4SPG.,

7'0" Josh Wittgren has been a contributor with seven blocks per game- eight points per- and seven boards per game. Josh is only 220 but Wright State, Northern Illinois, and Olney Juco stay involved

The LCC Story is legendary!! Four classes of basketball is perfect for the private school. 2000 marks their 3rd trip to the final game in 3 years. 6'7" Tyler Best runs the team but 6'4" Soph. Russell Trudeau is the player that "keeps the defenses honest...." Russell is becoming a 2G thru hard work in the gym and plyometrics. His Soph. averages of 19PPG and 10 RPG per games have interest from Purdue, Notre Dame, and Cincinnatti....LCC has made sure they always have the ingredients but small town Union is willing to bet they have the home grown unified effort !!

This 9:30 AM battle at Conseco Field House in Indy. is a cannot miss game for recruiters and fans !!

2A Class news and interviews on Tuesday !!

Sunday-March 19, 2000

Southeast Indiana's Top Senior is Michael Frazier of Charlestown High

The stocky 5'9" Frazier defines the combo guard position as he equally scores or sets his teammates up in the same fashion that UCONN'S Khalid El-Amin does....A legit triple threat to 25'--Frazier led his school to the class 3A regional championship game where they lost a heartbreaker 66-65 to rival Scottsburg....Michael for the season led his team with averages of 25.2 ppg., 5 apg. and 4 rpg.

Frazier has JUCO offers from Danville, John Logan and Cincinnatti State.... Barton County Kansas has called but in spite of other website rumors-- they have not offered....Frazier will be playing in the HBCA all-star game and he will be in the top 40 workout....Michael mentioned to IBN that his 6'0" PG teammate Ricky Odle is vastly underrated and also a big reason that he had so many open looks each game....Odle is a solid small college prospect and he finished his career with averages of 18 ppg.,6 apg. and 5 rpg.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE SEMI STATE CHAMPIONS!!!! Next Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse promises to be the best prep basketball in America!! Union Dugger, Lafayette Catholic, Westview, Winchester, Andrean, Brebeuf, Marion and Bloomington North will all be battling for a state crown in their respective Class...IBN will be interviewing the participants all this week!! Read it first at Indiana Basketball News......

Saturday-March 18,2000

Olney Central JUCO had a top 20 national year !!

No one played better for Olney than former Evansville 1998 preps Wes Attebury (Evansville Reitz) and Michael Darrett(Evansville Bosse)....Attebury was named Illinois SE Region player of the year...He has been offered by Univ. of Southern Indiana,Kentucky Weslyean and University of Inpls....Bosse grad 6'2" point guard "has always been big time" and Mike Darrett now must choose between Southern Illinois, Long beach and Dayton

The Unsigned Senior Workout is April 9,2000 from 2-6 PM. The University of Indpls. is attempting to secure their facility and The Spiece gym Rats wants the workout in Ft. Wayne

Regardless- recruiters and players must sign up on line before April 1 if this workout is to become reality....We want to help all involved Seniors but if they cannot committ before April 1 then we will not organize this workout.

CAMERON STEPHENS UPDATE

The Ft.Wayne,In. native ended his one season career at Vincennes in defeat to Kankakee JC 79-71.... Cam averaged 13ppg. and 12rpg. for the Blazers....Hammond,In. native Tyray Pearson (IOWA STATE) led the Cavs all season....Cam Stephens now plans to visit his favorite 4 year schools including:UNC-CHARLOTTE, BALL STATE ,BOWLING GREEN, UMASS, MEMPHIS, OKLAHOMA, LONG BEACH STATE, and SOUTHERN ILLINOIS....Many predict Ball State but we believe Cam is sincere about choosing the school that needs him to "put up big numbers" inside....Playing next to the prolific Aaron Mcghee (OKLAHOMA signee) at VU,Cam did not have the opportunities to score that he desires in his next college program.

BRANDON WEBB CHOOSES OKLAHOMA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY

The 6'6" jump shooter from Knox High School has accepted a full scholarship to the Oklahoma City NAIA program.Brandon's father Ron also played college basketball at OCU....

Yesterday evening Webb's 36 points propelled his Redskins past Boone Grove 62-57 for the first regional championship in school history....22-2 Knox will now meet 16-6 Ft. Wayne Harding in the first game (10:00 A.M.) of the Marion Class 2A Semi-state.

Wednesday-March 15 ,2000

April 9, 2000 IBN has agreed to conduct a workout for unsigned seniors. We have no problem doing this and we want to do so but we will not deal with anyone that cannot commit before April 1....All interested players and recruiters should submit names now if they want to have athletes involved....Much expense is involved doing the workout right so if support is poor we will once again not do the workout....All we do is 12 months per year hear how prep coaches do not promote their players--while so many parents must realize that they must be involved in all aspects of their son's college exposure --if a scholarship is to become a reality....This college exposure workout will be attended by many colleges and Universities still seeking to fill next season's roster

6'4" PF MARCUS OLUGOSI of HAMMOND HIGH

Long and explosive, Marcus is Indiana's best shot blocker!Rarely do we see a player averaging more blocks(7 per game) than points (6 per game). His repertoire of offensive moves is limited and raw but his skill is not as lacking as his average indicates....Rarely does the big fella touch the ball in the guard oriented Wildcat system....Most of his shots would come from putbacks....A solid student Marcus has only Purdue -Calumet offering at this time..Jucos and low majors that actually develop their recruits have a physical specimen in Marcus Olugosi that could develop into a huge division one talent in two years....His quick hi rising shot blocking presence is God given and his desire to actively defend the post is rarely seen in today's prospects....Many want to reject and defend like Marcus but few come close to his talent defensively....Olugosi will be participating in the April IBN workout for unsigned seniors

Tuesday-March 14,2000

What in the world could tiny Whiting High School have in common with Indiana State University?? Both learning institutions enjoyed their finest boys/mens basketball seasons in 20 years.Oiler mentor Kevin Lenz learned the art of building a program from Sycamore magician Royce Waltman....Lenz was a starting center for Waltman's first college team at Depauw University....Apparently a quick study ,as Lentz led Whiting to their first tourney win in 20 years and to the sectional championship game versus Michigan City Marquette.

6'3"2G MICHAEL NASTAV is the Oilers lone hoop prospect and he is an outstanding one!!No school has tougher athletes but the LAKE MICHIGAN school is enthralled with the pigskin....NASTAV shoots deep treys and is equally adept scoring off the dribble....NCAA 2 CAPABLE, his attention thus far has been from division three AURORA..,LAKELAND..,ELMHURST and MANCHESTER....Nastav finished his career with averages of 22 ppg. and 6 rebounds per contest.

Monday-March 13, 2000

CLASS OF 2001 (JUNIORS)TOP COLLEGE PROSPECTS

America's major colleges and university's are now focusing their recruiting efforts on high school juniors. A few schools are still searching for that prep senior or juco that will contribute next season;but, the solid programs are "good to go "next season and they now turn their time towards the class of 2001......A few top prospects are not included in our top prospects since they either quit or were dismissed from their school team....Thirty or more prospects are borderline and if this TOP PROSPECT list does not continue to "step up their game "-THEN THEY WILL STEP OUT OF IBN'S TOP JUNIOR PROSPECT LIST.

The NCAA division one open evaluation periods are April 7-12 and July 8-30.Juniors may be telephoned by division one recruiters one time from June 21-to July 1....After that Division recruiters can make three phone calls in July........

6'2" Senior 2G Mickey McGill

The "Jump shooting rim rattling" McGill finished his season scoring 22 ppg with 3SPG AND 5RPG!! His Rossville squad finished 13-8 and lost in first round of CLASS A action. Team hopes were dashed early in the season when top Soph Justin Chittick was dismissed from the team...Mickey has NCAA Div. one offers from Elon and Winthrop... NAIA power Taylor and the University of Indianpolis now lead for Mickey since he wants to stay near his ROSSVILLE home.... Decison soon !!

6'2" Sr. combo LATHANIEL STATEN

Team leader of #1 Ranked 3A Andrean, "STATE" has scored 18PPG, grabbed 4RPG, stole 3SPG and blocked 2 shots per game. This versatility has attracted interest from Illinois-Chicago, Eastern Kentucky, Southern Illinois, Northern Illinois, Western Michigan and Bowling Green. This multi-skilled big guard is likely to make the final four with Sr. all stater Shane Power and top sixty Jrs. Elliot Boarden and Rashad Pace

EAST CHICAGO UPSETS

Soph. Sleeper 6'5" Donnell Franklin's shot blocking fourth quarter presence led Gary Roosevelt to the 65-61 upset of host East Chicago.... Panther Jrs. Ken Lampley and Chad Knight each chipped in 20 pts.... EC'S high major stud Corey Stokes had no help as he finished his East Chicago career with 29 jump shooting pts.

Probably Indiana's biggest upset Friday night was in game two at East Chicago.... Munster shocked Gary West Side 70-68.... Munster's tight zone and huge free throw advantage was the difference. West Side super Soph. Brandon Cameron scored 19 before fouling out. He is the team's heart and they had little left after his departure. TOP 40 6'3" Jr. Guard Don Richards also hit 19 in the losing cause. The Key for Munster was the quick slashing PG 6'0" JOSH BOSHONOWSKI.... The Lefty Sr."sets up" all the Mustangs and this night he had 24 pts.and 8 assists. Woefully under rated by IBN-Mark Josh down as a can't miss D2 prospect.... 6'2" Aaaron Jillson drew fouls masterfully, yet- failed to score 20 points in spite of shooting 19 free throws..While struggling offensively, Jillson's ballhandling was very solid amidst the Cougar frenetic defense..He drew so much attention on offense, his Mustang teammate John Richey was open much of the evening...Jillson at 6'2" remains a sound D2 to LOW D1 prospect...TOP JUNIORS IN SUNDAY'S NEWS!!!!

Friday-March 10, 2000

JAMAAL DAVIS HAS NOT COMMITTED TO CINCINNATIDespite widespread reports that Jamaal Davis has chosen the Bearcats-Davis plans to follow thru with his previous report to IBN-and that is to visit schools this Spring. Since Bartons huge upsest loss Tuesday evening 83-77 to Independence-Jamaal now has plenty of time to pursue all options. Scoring 20 points and 12 boards in his final Jr. College game, Jamaal will first visit Cincy, Oklahoma and then Providence. He also committed to visiting others that he told to contact him after the season...We still believe he will land in Cincinnatti but things sometimes change during on campus visits...His teammate 5'10" PG Eric Bush (Anderson) will graduate this summer from Barton. Eric finished his season averaging 14ppg.,10APG and 6SPG. Eric will be visiting Hawaii, Oklahoma, East Carolina and, Florida before making his decision... Freshman 6'6" SF Carlton "Oudie" Baker (East Chicago) scored 19pts.,blocked 5 shots and grabbed 16 boards in the final game vs. Independence. Home sickness has been his only weakness as a Frosh. UMASS,MICHIGAN, IOWA, AND LOUISVILLE are his favorites

BALL STATE WINS MAC TOURNAMENT !!

Behind the steady play of Indiana natives, coach Ray McCallum's Cardinals defeated Miami of Ohio 61-58. No division one recruits Indiana preps better than Cardinal coach Ray Mac. Leading scorer 6'0" Duane Clemons(Muncie), Microwave reserve 6'2" Cedric Moodie(South Bend), PG Mickey Hosier(Alexandria),PF 6'7" Josh Murray(Indpls.), PG Petey Jackson(Munice) and shot blocker 6'10" Lonnie Jones(Gary)are all key contributors. The BSU championship win guarantees their NCAA tourney invite. Maybe now coach Ray Mac. will get the contract extension he earned a long time ago !! BSU'S invite to the big dance insures an unprecendented six INDIANA COLLEGES will be involved in March madness. INDIANA STATE, BSU, INDIANA, PURDUE, BUTLER, and VALPARAISO will be representing Hoosier land. NOTRE DAME and EVANSVILLE would also be good choices but probable NIT choices.

ALL LEVELS OF INDIANA COLLEGE BASKETBALL HAS NEVER BEEN STRONGER THAN THIS 2000 SEASON !!

VILLANOVA defector BOBBY SMITH is now considering Ball State and Marquette. Since BSU leads for Purdue defector and Vincennes Star Cameron Stephens, the reunion of former AAU State champs Smith and Stephens is an intriguing possibility.... the Slashing duo dominated nationally their Junior to be summer until Stephens broke his ankle in late July ...... Expect another EastCoast BIG EAST defection soon to a midwest mid to high major college. Our sources state it is done within a month for a BIG EAST player to be looking for relocation in the midwest.

VALPARAISO UNIVERSITY WINS 6TH CONSECUTIVE TOURNEY CHAMPIONSHIP!!

IBN salutes Homer Drew's Crusaders for doing what no other NCAA DIVISION 1 program has done in recent years.....they have won their 6th straight conference title championship and tourney title in 6 years by dropping Southern Utah 71-62....This tourney crown is especially sweet for Homer and asst. coach son Scott because they struggled with finding any guard that was capable to "feed their top notch post players ".No other NCAA DIVISION 1 program has ever won 6 consecutive tourney championships!!!

BUTLER WINS MCC CONFERENCE AND THE TOURNAMENT

The Bulldogs dumped Detroit 62-43 for the MCC tourney championship while they previously were MCC CONFERENCE champs. Many fans ask us why Barry Collier stays with the low profile program since he has brought so much NCAA tourney money to them and he could do so much more in a high major program...Bottom line is Collier loves the school he played for and the perk is he earns huge money in the Butler summer camp program...Why should he move to a rebuilding situation when he can annually outsmart MCC SCHOOLS AT $250,000 PLUS per year???

FOURTH CLASS STATEWIDE TOURNEY TIPS OFF TONIGHT!!

For decades Indiana basketball boasted the greatest prep tourney in America!!Three years ago the state association decided to " water down the crown " by conducting four school size tourneys ..Instead of a single state champion--the IHSAA believes you should compete for state titles only against schools of similar school population......The last time we checked ,teams play no more than 8 players in title games so who can say your school of 1500 boys has 8 better players than a school of 200 boys -who... also play no more than 8 athletes....Quantity not quality is the norm now in America's ever increasing socialistic society; so, why should the hoop Gods expect our beloved tourney to do anything other than reflect current societal trends??

Regardless of the sad tourney state of affairs,Hoosierland still boasts the greatest players and coaches in America..Their excellence will always overcome idiotic decisions by overpaid politicians.

As we watch games statewide, we do not normally " stick our neck out "with final game predictions but this year we have chosen to enter the prediction game.

CLASS 4A -- BLOOMINGTON NORTH VS. MARION

CLASS 3A -- ANDREAN VS. BREBEUF

CLASS 2A -- WESTVIEW VS. MONROVIA

CLASS 1A -- TECUMSEH VS. LAFAYETTE CENTRAL CATHOLIC

Crunch time is now for seniors seeking scholarships. We hope all seniors will finalize their college plans thru tourney play but if that is not possible then sign up online for IBN'S APRIL UNSIGNED SENIOR WORKOUT.....IBN is committed to providing college exposure opportunities for all capable senior preps

6'3" Andrew Ford (West Lafayette) and 5'10" Eric Yoder (Westview)

Point guards are the key to success in Indiana prep basketball.West Lafayette(15-5) and defending class 2a state champion Westview(18-4) are ignited by two good point guards.

Andrew Ford averages 18.5ppg.and 5apg. with all the tools you would ever want in a PG.He scores, defends and playmakes..Son of (Purdue legend and current boilermaker TV broadcaster) Bob Ford, Andrew's talent has attracted offers from Cal Poly,St.Josephs,Mercyhurst,Depauw and Franklin.

Westview relies on the "nation of Yoder" for everything and Eric is the catalyst..He must "set up" and distribute the ball to the scoring Yoders--Jason and Derek...Scoring at 7ppg. and throwing 6apg.,recruiters will not find a more aggressive player than Eric...He keys their swarming, confidence destoying defense...NAIA powers Tri-State and Taylor are both coveting his services..

Both Ford and Yoder are two more prime examples of outstanding Indiana point guard prospects...No state in America annually produces more quality guard prospects than Hoosierland!!

SOUTHPORT'S OSIRIS LANDS--IBN'S 1999-2000 TOP SCHOLAR ATHLETE

The 5'10" 160lb. Southport PG has been rated a low-mid major prospect with his playmaking, ballhawking skill....Academically he is high major with his 4.6/4.0 GPA and monster 1350 SAT..Not satisfied, Southport's VALEDICTORIAN tells IBN he will score 1550-1600 when he retakes it in May."Silly mistakes" Lands says he made when he scored 1350!What a breath of fresh air it is to talk with a true student-athlete that competes in the classroom as well as on the court..His penetrating slashing transition skills conflict with Southport's ball control system but he still averages 15ppg. and 6apg...Most college interest is from Morehouse,Depauw,Northwestern and The Ivy League. He will make his college choice in April. His mentor in this process is his uncle Steve Downing.Hoosier fans will remember Steve as a 1969 state champ at Washington High and later a star at IU.Currently Steve is the assistant athletic director at Indiana University. All interested recruiters in OSIRIS LANDS should contact Steve Downing at IU.

TECUMSEH SET TO DEFEND CLASS A CROWN

The 1999 KINGS of CLASS A at 15-6 this season have played a tough schedule in preparation for their title defense......Last March they derailed(1998 CLASS A champs) Lafayette Catholic's title run hopes by dethroning LCC 55-43 for the state championship....Lost to graduation this season was their inside duo of Jake Holder and Chris King....Their 2000 title run will be determined by their ability to disrupt the opponent with their frenetic defense...This attack is led by 6'0" senior bookend guards Jeremy Broshears and Jimmy Funkhouser..No quicker-hard nosed duo in Hoosierland,Broshears and Funkhouser will destroy your game by halftime if you do not come to play.Scoring at 18.7ppg.,Jeremy has interest from Brescia and Hanover College.Jimmy scores at 15.7ppg and also has Hanover and Depauw interested....Their athleticism, quicks, skill and tenacity is why IBN has always rated them "can't miss" NCAA DIVISION 2 prospects....Coach Kevin Oxley's 1999 championship game plan was a "clinic on how to coach your team to it's strengths." He will need similar preparations for Tecumseh to defeat Barr Reeve and Loogootee in Regionals.....Repeating as champs in 2000 will be difficult for Tecumseh..However, as long as Jeremy Broshears and Jimmy Funkhouser are on the court and Kevin Oxley is patrolling the sidelines-----ONLY A SIMPLETON WOULD BET AGAINST THE TECUMSEH BRAVES!!!

KELLY,KLEYMEYER AND KOMATINA LEAD PARK TUDOR TO BEST SEASON EVER

Known more for elite academics than athletics, the hoops squad is 16-4 and favored to advance deep into the Class A tourney.Much of the success is due to the leadership of third year coach Ed Kelley. The former Butler University asst. is 41-23 in three years. Before his reign PT only won 12 games in four years.

Leading the way is four year career 20PPG shooter Matt Kleymeyer. The 6'2" 3 sport star, Matt, plans to pursue college hoops with his IVY LEAGUE 3.8 GPA and 1140 SAT. Much quicker this season-Matt as a football QB recorded a 4.6. forty yard dash. IBN has always rated the pure shooter a solid low major prospect. Most interest has been from Lafayette College, Hanover and Depauw.

Very exciting is the potential of 6'6" 190 lb. FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT SINISA KOMATINA. The Belgrade, Yugoslavia native is similar to Union Modoc's 6'8" Bosko Kalinic (Croatia) in that his offensive skills are from point to small forward but his defense is weak. Yet-his Athleticism equals mid-major potential ala MAC or MO.VOLLEY ;if, he develops in a strong JUCO for two years. Now he is a D2 Steal !! His 15PPG and 10 RPG has Marian, Anderson, Franklin and JUCOS GLEN OAKS,DANVILLE AND OLNEY all interested.

6'2" 200 LB Ross Fleck is the total team role player for Park Tudor as he muscles in the paint while he already has a baseball scholarship to Wright State University.

What Other Indiana High School offers elite academics for college preparation while also now being a factor in Athletics? IBN SALUTES PARK TUDOR HIGH SCHOOL !!

FLYNN BROTHERS LEAD NEW ALBANY INTO 4A TOURNEY

Remember 1971 Mr.Basketball Mike Flynn of Jeffersonville?

The Former Kentucky Wildcat Star and Indiana Pacer is alive and well as the owner of Mike Flynn associates. MFA is an industry leader in Brokering Mortgages.

His 6'3" Sr. son Mike Jr. and 6'0" sophomore son Marcus have combined to help lead New Albany to a 15-4 record. Actually Mike and Marcus DNP in losses to Floyd Central and Indianapolis Pike due to an ankle sprain and Mononeucleosis.

Mike Jr. may be the biggest NCAA Divison one sleeper in the state. An incredible defender, Jr. held Myron Hodge to 6 points in a blowout of Bosse. He frustrated Dennis Coutee in that loss to Jeffersonville and we will not soon forget how he held Andre Owens to two points while scoring 18 in AAU at Brownsburg. Mike has to play all positions for the Bulldogs to win but naturally he is a 2G. His 13ppg, 9rpg and 5apg has Evansville and Fordham interested (Former Pacer coach Bob Hill). His 3.8 core GPA and 1020SAT is strong and Mike Jr. seeks a computer Animation course of study.

The 6'0" 165 PG sophomore Marcus Flynn will be a high major when he graduates in 2002. Currently he is the "set up man" at New Albany. Scoring at 8PPG and serving 7 assist/game, Marcus is " the Straw that stirs" New Albany.A huge talent, Marcus must be considered a front runner for Mr.Basketball in 2002.

JUNIOR COLLEGE JEWELS

1998 graduates Michael Darrett(Evansville Bosse) and Lincoln Glass(South Bend Clay) are now BIG TIME NCAA division one prospects as point guards. The 6'2" DARRETT is a big time athlete that has led Olney to a top 20 national JUCO ranking. His linebacker like strength has garnered offers from Southern Illinois,Dayton and Long Beach State.......Lincoln Glass of Lincoln Trail JC at 5'10" and 185lbs. has been big time since his senior year at Clay. After being Northwest Indiana's best player with 21ppg.,6rpg. and 6apg.--Glass had to campaign to just be an alternate in the top 40 Hoosier Basketball Magazine college exposure workout. At Lincoln Trail Glass has proved that he has always been the truth. While many of those top 40 politicians are doing nothing,Glass is having big decisions to make between offers from:Utah,Dayton,So.Illinois,No. Illinois,Appalachain State,Alabama,Clemson and Pittsburgh. Not bad for someone not deemed worthy of Indiana's 1998 top 40!

Evansville Bosse's 6'6" Myron Hodge

Olney Central JUCO and Indiana native Lance Madison must now be considered the frontrunner for Hodge and all others being tied for second.Reason being is that another friend from the 'hood will also be accompanying Marvelous Myron at top 20 JUCO power Olney Central JC of Robinson,Illinois.
